Hillsdale is in the eastern reaches of Columbia County, hard against the Taconic Range and close to both the Massachusetts border at Egremont and the Connecticut border to the south. The landscape here is genuinely rural — working farms, forested hillsides, small villages — and the community has attracted both long-established farming families and a newer wave of creative and professional residents who have found here the combination of natural beauty and proximity to New York City and Boston that they were looking for.

The communities of Copake, Copake Falls, Ancram, Livingston, and Taghkanic are all within the Hillsdale service corridor. The Catamount ski area and the Taconic State Park campgrounds draw a seasonal population that adds to the year-round base. Many properties in this area are part-time residences — weekend homes and summer houses that need to be reliably maintained even when the owners aren't present.

Housing here skews older and more rural than much of our service territory. 18th and 19th century farmhouses are common, as are converted barns, historic carriage houses, and other agricultural structures repurposed as residences. Fuel oil and propane are the dominant heating fuels — natural gas doesn't reach this part of the county. We have significant experience with the mechanical systems common in these older rural properties, including gravity-fed hot water systems, steam boilers, and oil-fired furnaces that have been in continuous service for decades.

The elevation of the Taconic foothills creates meaningful cold-climate demands. Hillsdale winters are colder than the river valley, and properties at higher elevations need equipment specified accordingly. Cold-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi and Bosch perform well here and we've installed them successfully at the elevations common throughout eastern Columbia County.
