Knob-and-tube wiring, installed in homes built before 1950, was designed for a world of incandescent bulbs and a handful of outlets per room. Knob-and-Tube vs. Aluminum Wiring

Knob-and-tube is a two-wire system (hot and neutral, no ground) that runs through porcelain knobs and ceramic tubes in framing. The issue is age — insulation becomes brittle and cracks, connections loosen, and junction points oxidize. Aluminum wiring (used in many 1960s–70s homes) expands and contracts differently than copper, causing connections to loosen over time and creating heat at receptacles and switches. Both are manageable with the right remediation.

The Rewiring Process

We minimize wall opening wherever possible using fish tape and flexible drill bits to route new wire through existing stud cavities. In most cases we can rewire a room with small access holes at outlet and switch locations only. For full transparency, we provide a written scope describing exactly which areas will require access before work begins.
